Daniel Leatherbarrow

Post by rankin216 »

Having a very hard time locating a record of marriage for Daniel (went by the name of Edward) Leatherbarrow...b 21 Oct 1903 had 3 children in Ormskirk but unable to find. The wife I think went by the name of Ivy...not sure what her given name is. The 3 children are ..Edward, Caroline and Robin. I did find the baptism record for Daniel but nothing else...this is the leatherbarrow that took his family to Sydney Australia in the late 1940's early 1950's...can't locate any info on him once he left the UK

I would ask that details of possible living people are not posted on the forum, for their privacy.

We have tried to put together some suggestions for searching for living relative here.

sorry about that

Post by rankin216 »

my apologies...again. Just want to do this for my dad, diagnosed with cancer and has such warm memories of his Uncle Eddie, whom he was named after. He feels he needs to make the connection. last time he was in the UK and went to Mughull to visit the house he visited as a young boy, he was informed that a son of the previous owner had just been to visit from Australia. My father still has a sense of "missing" out...like he was supposed to see this son of his beloved Uncle. This is why I'm on this quest. The house in Mughull had a sign on the outside and it was called "The Anchorage" he remembers as a young boy that the family livd upstairs and there was a sweet shop on the lower level

If you google The Anchorage Maghull, you will get a few hits for Liverpool Road North or more particularly Gordon Avenue, unfortunately it doesn't appear that googlemaps covered Gordon Avenue, but you will get the area at least. Note the spelling of Maghull.

Edward Leatherbarrow mother's maiden Chubb born 1915 - www.freebmd.org.uk

You really need to get the 1911 census to get the children's dates sorted. You will have to buy credits on www.findmypast.co.uk but if you put Dorothy leatherbarrow born 1901 in Lancashire you only get one hit so it must be the right one. The index doesn't show a Daniel born 1903 but www.freebmd.org.uk shows him born 1903 and died 1904.

I think you mean Maghull.

You could write to the local paper but as Mary has said look at the notes that have been put together for finding the living.

where did you find the information on Daniel.....it is my understanding that daniel still lived on until his death in 1973 in Australia. He went by the name Edward. My father had an Uncle eddie I figured that he was Daniel and went by the name Edward. Is there a son named Edward born to Edward and Caroline? about the early 1900's? are you sure the Daniel that passed is the Daniel belonging to "my" Leatherbarrow.

We would be unable to be positive about the queries you have asked above. Only by obtaining the death certificate and checking the details, including whoever registered the death, would you be certain that he was yours.

As previously requested, please give details from the 1911 census for the family, you may have found an unknown child on there. There are often occasions when a child dies and the family name another after him, the Daniel who died in 1973 in Australia may be the second in the family. Do Australian death certificates give the date of birth as the British ones do?

I would think this is unlikely unless there is a forum member researching the same surname, perhaps you could check the Member's interests and Surname Lists on the main Society page to see if there is anybody, also follow a couple of the suggestions given previously to try to make contact with living relatives, also a post in the local newspaper might prove fruitful.

If you search the 1911 census for people living in West Derby with Dorothy Leatherbarrow you get:

Edward 1876
Caroline 1876
Thomas 1900
Ellen 1906
Mary Agnes 1909
Caroline 1910

FreeBMD shows that baby Caroline died in 1912 aged 2.

In addition to Edward (b 1915, mother's name Chubb), there is also a Sidney Leatherbarrow b 1919, mother's name Chubb.

No sign of any further Daniel's after the one who died in 1904.

It's looking likely that Uncle Eddie used the name Edward because that really was his name.

Although it's possible to miss a couple before 1912 when the mother's maiden name was given in the indexes, it looks like Alison has the right Edward born 1915, that would seem very likely.

I have done a bit more research on this.

I found that Ivy Agnes Leatherbarrow nee Dinwoodie had 4 children, Edward who passed away in infancy, Edwin, Caroline and Robin (twins), Caroline passed away a year later.

Ivy went to Hong Kong with the two boys in 1954 (you will need to purchase credits for Findmypast to see this information), she then returns to England in 1957 with the two boys (incoming passengers on ancestry site)

Ivy (spelt Ivey A B on her birth reg Oct-Dec Q 1916)

Also found on Australian Elec rolls 1980 Ivy A Leatherbarrow, (ancestry)
Robin Leatherbarrow also found 1980.

Leatherbarrows

Post by rankin216 »

I wanted to update everyone on my search for the Australian Leatherbarrows, as of this morning we have made contact with each other. I contacted the NSW library and they provided me with updated information from a more recent electoral roll showing Ivy living with someone, I wrote to that person and they received my letter then emailed me to confirm they are the Leatherbarrows I am searching for. They have promised to provide more info along with pictures within the next few days. I must say it has been a very good day and my father is over the moon!
