Stephen Nulty has emailed me to say that he has tried to post a reply here but found it would not work. Here is what he wrote:
"What I wanted to say was that for the vast majority of date of death discrepancies, such as those which Katie has posted, the error has arisen from the Commission’s digitisation of its records back ini the 1990’s. In such cases, they will quickly and readily check the original records and correct the error. Dickiesam’s comment about expecting 100% accuracy is misplaced as it wasn’t a transcription but a digitisation.
I have had several cases like this and in each case, an email to CWGC asking them to check has resulted in a quick correction. It’s important for people to realise that the error is purely in the online database and not the commission records."
He and I both hope to be at tomorrow's event.

If Stephen wishes to contact me about his inability to post he will find that if he checks my profile and then hovers his mouse over the "email" button, he will find an address that will reach me.

Re: Lance-Sergeant Alfred Ernest Moon
If you look on the War Photographic Project site his Commonwealth Headstone records his date of death as 10th September 1919. His headstone would have been erected in 1926 so in this case it is a error made by the Commission way back then. I'll show you to-morrow

His entry in the CWGC hard copy register for Corbie Communal Cemetery Extension, and printed in 1922, reads:_
'MOON, Lce. Serjt. A.E., 18464. 12th Bn. The King's Liverpool Regt. 10th Sept. 1916. Plot 2, Row C, Grave 70'

Re: Lance-Sergeant Alfred Ernest Moon
Ok Steve but have you had a look on the TGWPP site. Threy show his date of death as 10th September 1919. I was talking to Joe about it yesterday. I have got me magnifying glass out and had a look at the date on the stone and it looks like a 6 to me. If that's the case TGWPP are getting the date of death they have recorded on their site from the CWGC. I have sent a e.mail to TGWPP and asked them to check their picture. let you know their reply when I get one.

Thanks Katie, we'll meet somewhere in the middle
.... and it will all be right in the end
Have you raised this one with CWGC yet? I only ask because I am dropping them a line later about another query and can add Pte MOON to my query.

I have submitted the change via the In From The Cold project. They are methodically working their way through the original hard copy registers and looking for scanning errors. L/SJt MOON has now been accepted by them as such an error and will be submitted to CWGC for correction in the next few days, and the online register should be corrected within 30 days.
This is a quicker route that direct to CWGC, where they tend to be running with about six weeks worth of emails requests in arrears.

Thanks Steve
I have some more which I could send to In from the Cold. Oh! why did I start this. Still worth it in the end to have the correct dates of death recorded.

I've asked that more than once, and the second part of your quote answers the first !Katie wrote:Oh! why did I start this. Still worth it in the end to have the correct dates of death recorded.
Re: Lance-Sergeant Alfred Edward Moon
I have had a reply of the TGWPP and they can confirm the date of death on the headstone is 10th September 1916 and they have altered their records. They must have got that date of CWGC in the first place no wonder so many mistakes are made.
