LIVERPOOL CATHOLIC ORPHANAGES 1934-1938

Post by Kathy »

Hi there

I have been trying to establish which orphanages my mother and her two brothers were sent to somewhere between 1934 and 1938. My mother went to an all girls and the two boys went to an all boys.

I recall my mother saying that she was brought up in a convent run by nuns - no surprises there, I know. However it was suggested that she would have been in Knolle Park which I understand is known locally by alternative names. I have been on to different people seeking information and was referred back down here (London) to an archivist at St Mary's Convent who has access to the records from Knolle Park. He says he has no record of my mother being there.

Does anyone have any ideas as to where I can go to find out which orphanages these children went to, please?

Thank you very much.

You could try getting in touch with The Nugent Care Society, 594 Edge Lane, Liverpool.

There where other Orphanges.

Fazackerly Cottage Homes all Denominations went there.
Also there was Leyfield in West Derby, some of my Scanlon clan wen't there. Your best way forward will be to write the the above. They may be able to assist you.

I have tried Nugent Care without success. Would the Liverpool Records Office keep such records?

Thanks.

The Nugent Care Society have records for Leyfield etc. Fazackerly Cottage Homes Records are held at Liverpool however there is 100 year restriction. You could e.mail them and ask their advice.

Try Nazareth House in Crosby. My mother and her sister were placed there in 1931 on the recommendation of their parish priest. Apparently it was common practice for catholic family's to place their children in there during times of crisis ect... its worth a try.

Members of the Society have transcribed entries in a couple of censuses for entries in a variety of Orphanages, Catholic or otherwise http://www.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/I ... mation.htm These might give you some clues, so that armed with a shortlist you could perhaps do a bit of research into them at the appropriate dates, at the Liverpool Record Office.

I must stress, however, that as Katie points out, there is usually a 100 year closure on many Registers and so it might be another 20-30 years before they are available.

I would like to thank all those who have kindly replied to my post. I believe the orphanages involved were in Thingwall for the boys and St Gabrielles for my mother. The time period would have been somewhere between 1934 and 1938 for their admissions. I am going to contact the LRO again to see if they can point me in some direction that I have not yet been.

If anyone knows anything about these establishments from this time I would love to hear from you

Thank you all again.
