Reginald James Powell and Albert Fowler - 1/6th Kings WW1

Post by Duncan Reginald »

Hope I'm in the right area of the site...
Both my grandfather and my great uncle were in the 1/6th King's Liverpool Rifles in WW1.
Grandfather Reginald James Powell served in Flanders 1915 and then was wounded at Somme 1916.
Great uncle Albert Fowler (Soldier number 2316) was KIA 5/5/15 but I know nothing more. He is commemorated at Menin Gate and also on his mother's headstone at Liverpool Anfield Cemetery (saw photo on C'wealth war Graves Photographic Project).
Any further info on either man would be very gratefully received..
Thanks,
Duncan

I'm suspecting this would be the baptism of Reginald
Born 16 October, 1893, baptised 14 January 1894 - Reginald James Powell at St Cyprian, Edge Hill
Parents James Edward and Catherine Powell, father's occupation Bookkeeper, Address 17 Odsey Street

What was Albert Fowler's mother's name and what date did she die?

Trying to work out the differences between the names May and Griffiths, 1881 census seems to suggest that Catherine's mother had been married twice.

Duncan
I have some information for you. If you make a couple more posts here I will be able to send you a personal message, so I suggest you acknowledge Mary's information and this.
You should then be eligible , I think, to receive a p.m.

I don't believe there is a restriction on sending or receiving pm's, unlike other forums.

Here goes, anyway. I am passing this on from someone who has a copy of the war diary.

“5th May 1915 Ypres

9.30 am. Orders received for Battalion to move up to 15th Brigade Headquarters. Battalion moved off at 10.15 am by Companies.  “A” Company immediately on arrival ordered to report to OC Cheshires in  Railway Cutting. “B” Company ordered to proceed and take up positions in trenches astride the railway near Gangers Hut. “C” Company received orders direct from Brigadier to move to ZILLEBEKE VILLAGE via Etang de Zillebeke and to attack in direction of trench 42 with ZILLEBEKE-KLEIN-ZILLEBEKE road as centre.

2.20 pm. Orders received for Headquarters and “D” Company to move to SW End of Etang de Zillebeke and to take cover in the Burrow Pit.

4.20 pm. Notification received that “B” Company had been ordered to move up to Larchwood and report to OC Cheshires.
No report having been received from “C” Company regarding their attack “D” Company ordered to send out patrols to establish communication.
Casualties – Captain E H Brocklehurst & Lieut. T W Wilson killed. Lt R L Dobell & 2nd Lieut B H Archbould(?) wounded. 20 other ranks killed and 68 other ranks wounded.

9.00 pm. Verbal orders received that HQ and “D” Coy to move to dug out in railway embankment near Brigade HQ. Move not made until 3.35 am owing to heavy shelling. “

The diary also contains the post-action reports from the four companies, through Rfn Fowler is not mentioned, along with maps of the area.

Thanks again - this is really filling in some gaps in my research. I have a diary written by George Powell, my great great grandfather from the ship Lesbos in 1865, on which he was sailmaker. It's fascinating!
My detailed research is WW1 - cycling 3 times a year to the Somme to walk the trenches and retrace my grandfather's footsteps through the fields around Guillemont, Ginchy, Flers.
I'm now looking at my great uncle, Albert Fowler, mother's maiden name Carr, died 1939.I've seen her grave on the Commonwealth war Graves Photograhic Project site, as she included her son Albert, who'd died 24 years earler aged 24 (1891-5.5.1915) Thanks again, Duncan

Thanks to all - this is very useful stuff!
Would really like to see the article mentioned by Katie in the Liverpool Echo 24.4.15 regarding great uncle Albert Fowler. Any ideas?

Duncan has also posted on the Great War Forum and has been provided with a most comprehensive biographical note on Powell. Sadly, not many of the WW1 victims have been so well documented.
