Re: ORPHANAGES
Hi,
I know this is not answering your question about the location of orphanages but with regard to orphanage records there is a strong possibility that those from the 1920s may be closed in respect of the 100 year rule.
In case you don't have this information, these are the parents of your g.father William Alfred:
William A Shalliker married Jessie Bates
Registration district: West Derby
Year/qtr of registration: 1912 / Apr-May-Jun
Volume no: 8B; Page no: 1040
According to census returns William A Shalliker was born abt 1880. Using that YoB as a base I believe this may be his death:
SHARLIKER, William A
Registration district: Liverpool North
Year/qtr of registration: 1959 / Jan-Feb-Mar
Age at death: 78
Volume no: 10D; Page no: 418.
This is probably his birth:
SHARLIKER, William Alfred
Registration district: West Derby
Year/qtr of registration: 1880 / Jul-Aug-Sep
Volume no: 8B; Page no: 516.
And he may have remarried or is this his son?
Marriage: William A Shalliker married Mary Grainger.
Registration district: Liverpool North
Year of registration: 1942 / Jul-Aug-Sep
Volume no: 8B; Page no: 861.

Re: ORPHANAGES
Did the mum die in Whiston Hospital? The children may have been sent to Fazackerley Cottage Homes. The records are held at Sandhills, Liverpool however the research officer will have to access the records as they are closed for 100 years

Re: ORPHANAGES
Hi and welcome to the forum.
A similar question has been asked recently and I believe the same answers would be applicable to yours. I don't know of any orphanages in the Litherland area, not to say there aren't any, other may know, but I would think it might be worth your while to enquire with the Cottage Homes in Fazakerley, that would be the most logical with your mention of Aintree.

Re: ORPHANAGES
No luck finding Jessie going to Oz. She may have come with a group of children with the Home Child Scheme??
In 1938 Directory there is one Shaliker and 6 Shalliker's listed.

Re: ORPHANAGES
Haven't found either Jessie or George leaving the UK in the outgoing passenger lists 1920 to 1960.Tina wrote:Just to help with searches in Aus & USA
Jessie bn 1913 Wm A 1914 and George D 1917 all W.Dby nee Bates.
But, did find this:
George D Shallicker married Evelyn Saunderson
Registration district: Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire
Year/qtr of registration: 1956 / Jan-Feb-Mar
Volume no: 8C; Page no: 994.
Sadly, this appears to be Evelyn's passing:
Death: SHALLIKER, Evelyn Alice M
Registration district: Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire
Year/qtr of registration: 1972 / Jan-Feb-Mar
Date of Birth: 7 April 1914
Volume no: 8C; Page no: 1985
I assume it is family lore that George went to the USA? Given the close proximity of Haverfordwest to Pembroke Dock, my thinking is that:
A) He could have been in the RAF, because the Dock was a major RAF base up to about 1957. He could have been in the US as crew without appearing in any passenger lists.
B) Or he may have been in the Army which had maintained a substantial presence in the area for many years.
C) Does his death certificate indicate his former occupation and who was the informant?

Re: ORPHANAGES
Good finds D.S
Looks like George married late in life.
marriage & death in Haverfordwest, no record to USA.
I feel your presumptions are correct.

Re: ORPHANAGES
Thanks Mark.
That would be Mary Grainger, see post from D.S
An anx member has posted a photo of George Dennis. Not sure of the protocol, will send you a private message.
No further info except his marriage and death. I'd say the poster is connected to Evelyn's family.
Just for your records Wm Alf was baptised at St Thomas Seaforth
26th September 1880, father Wm a plumber.

Re: ORPHANAGES
Side tracking here.
Was Walter Oswald Shalliker a cousin of the family, bapt 1878 St Thomas Seaforth to John & Esther?
His wife Susan & kiddies leave for Melbourne in 1912 and I've found Walter in electoral rolls in Victoria.
(2 of his sons are plumbers!)
Another limb on the tree???
The reason I ask is that Jessie may have ended up with this family.
ps I've emailed a genie pal in Qld who is passionate about finding children sent here under from orphanages and homes.

Re: ORPHANAGES
So my supposition may have been correct. There was, maybe still is because it is a very long time since I was there, a major Army presence in Pembrokeshire with huge firing ranges and weapon testing facilities. A lot of the county was 'out of bounds', especially seawards, when the red flags were up and the ranges were in use.george joined the army

Re: ORPHANAGES
Hi folks
Emailed Mark photo of George D & his wife Evelyn, she was married before nee Parry bn Dryfed.
241 Westminster Rd was the old Kirkdale Homes, I believe later it was a home for the aged. Our crew will know.
Wm Alf snr was at Faversham Rd genl labr in 1938 Directory.
My friend in Qld found Wm Alfred was lost at sea off the Sussex coast in 1958 aged 43yrs.
She also said, while some kiddies were going to Oz, at the last minute they were often sent to Canada.

Re: ORPHANAGES
The Kirkdale Homes was once an Industrial School, you can see some photographs of what it looked like here http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Liverpool/ scroll down till you come to it. Yes it became a home for the elderly from 1904 onwards, but a chilling place it was, hope many people went in there for only a short while.
