Irish Guards 1901

Post by ireneakeith »

My husband's grandfather was in the Irish Guards during WW1 . I have now found army records that show he actually joined in 1901 in Liverpool under an assumed name. He was from Galway. He left the army and became a policeman in Liverpool , He was recalled in 1914 and there is a document from a Westminster court confirming his correct names. Why would he have joined giving a false name ? Where can I find more records of 1st Battalion Irish Guards ?

The Guards regiments keep their own records and I think they are all based at Birdcage Walk, London sw1. Google will probably confirm the exact details.

There could be any number of reasons why he wanted to hide his identity, my family legend says my great uncle emigrated to USA and changed his name while leaving to avoid "a bit of trouble".
