Trying to Find John Moore in 1861

Post by howardsylven »

Hi
My brickwall is a John Moore (nothing like having a common name :-) )

I know that he married Elizabeth Story apr 25 1855 in St Brides church,
the cert lists his addr as 48 bridgewater street, his occupation is shipwright,
his father is john moore (deceased) who was a mariner

According to the liverpool mercury of 17th jan 1865 he died on jan 11 1865 aged 42 and he was from Blair street toxteth park.

in the 1871 and 1881 census elizabeth was still living at
1 in 5 ct Blair st
Toxteth Park Lancashire England

Unfortunately I have not had any success finding this address in the 1861 census at ancestry.com
and can not find the bridgewater address in the 1851 census.

By finding either of these records I hope to determine/confirm
his birth year
where he was born
other family

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

Hi there Howard and a warm welome to the forum.
I'm sure you will get lots of help.
Elizabeth is in 1871 census 42 widowed bn Lpool with children Wm 14, Joseph 10 and John 4 all born Tox Park.
This may help to find the family in 1861, although John may have been at sea.
Good luck
Ignore this, it's the wrong family

Hi Erika I discounted this one as Elizabeth was only 19, too young to have married in 1855.

Hello Howard,
The Moore family are not at 1 in 5 Court, Blair Street in 1861, nor are they a 48 Bridgewater Street.

In the 1871 census [RG10 - 3800 - 123 - 23] there is a son Joseph bn about 1867, but his father John died in 1865 if you have the right man.

I think you need to confirm that the John who died was Elizabeth's husband.
Deaths Mar 1865: MOORE, John - W. Derby - 8b - 325.

There's only one Joseph birth registered between 1865 and 1867 in Liverpool.
Births Mar 1866: Moore, Joseph - W. Derby - 8b - 302.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the great response

Simone has got the right family (the story name comes from Elizabeth's family), the nelson st addr is new and so is the name ellenn which is interesting as I got all the rest of the names from a family bible that follows the family back through elizabeth story back to the 1600's. I wonder why ellen wasn't included.

An interesting point is that one of my attempts to resolve john included a possibility that his mum was an ellen.

I will revisit my 1871 data but the 1881 data is..
1881 census
1 in 5 ct Blair st
Toxteth Park Lancashire England
PRO reference RG11
Piece/folio 3635 / 13
Page 20

Name Relation Marital Status Gender Age Birthplace Occupation Disability
Elizabeth MOORE Head W Female 57 Cumberland, England Formerly Dressmaker
Henry S. MOORE Son U Male 23 Liverpool, Lancashire, England Brass Finisher
Robert G. MOORE Son U Male 18 Lancashire, England Commercial Clerk

To try and find the 1861 entries I was thinking of trying to do an address search for a street near blair street and try and browse to the relevent page on the assumption that the transcription is wrong, does anyone know how to search ancestry using street names or the ho 107/........ numbers?

Dickiesam: I have only just found the newspaper reference to john's death
"jan 11,age 42, Mr. John Moore, shipwright. Blair-street, Toxtetb-park" and given the occupation and addr and the fact that the latest birth was 1863 I have assumed it is the correct person BUT I havent yet sourced the death cert.

Hi Howard

In the 1860 directory at 48 Bridgewater Street was Francis Davies, mariner.
John could have lodged there when he got married.
Bridgewater Street seemed to full of people who worked on the sea or around shipping and docks.
They were also a number of lodging houses.
I've been trying to find Bridgewater Street in 1851 census, but so far only got the south side!!- odd numbers

Thanks for that Bert.

However found 48 Bridgewater street on Liverpool, St Thomas, District 1p, page 12.

The transcription is very faint but I don't think John was at that address then, but it was a boarding house.

In the 1851 for Elizabeth, she is still living at home and her mother's name is Margaret, brothers Robert and Henry, which was also her father's name. Expect that's where all her children's names came from
