John Moss of Otterspool

Post by daggers »

This merchant and banker moved to Otterspool House, Aigburth in 1811, having lived in Mossley Hill previously.
Does any directory in the 1800 to 1810 period give a clue to his house? I realise that Aigburth and Mossley Hill were then out in the country.
(There is a good recent biography of Moss, but it omits this detail!)

Any clues welcomed.

Hi daggers

The only directory near that period is 1821.
I looked for John Moss and all it said was banker, Otterspool.
No clue for a road or where it was near.
How annoying, sorry

Does this help, if he lived with his father at the time of his death.

There's a reference to Otterspool House and an engraving of the building here, as well as other Moss information:

Thanks for those two links which sadly do not fill the gap between Moss at St Anne St and his purchase of the Otterspool estate.
I will try the author of the biography.

Hi daggers

Have you any idea what Mrs Moss christian name was and birth? There is a Mrs Moss in 1843 directory at Otterspool and wondered if we can check out the 1841 census for location

not much help with the Mossley Hill quest but the 1910 baptism of their son gives their address as Renshaw St

Baptism: 19 Mar 1810 St Anne Richmond, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
Thomas Moss - Son of John Moss & Hannah, His Wife
Born: 6 Jan
Abode: Renshaw St.
Occupation: Merchant
Register: Baptisms 1792 - 1812, Page 26, Entry 4
Source: LDS Film 1656149

fairly sure it's the right family as that Thomas died in infancy and in the same church we have

Baptism: 3 Sep 1812 St Anne Richmond, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
Thomas Moss - Son of John Moss, Gentleman & Hannah, His Wife
Born: 17 Jul 1811
Abode: Queen Anne St. At the House of Mr Moss the Elder
Register: Baptisms 1792 - 1812, Page 29, Entry 16
Source: LDS Film 1656149

and the address for the father clinches it.

Thanks for those clues. They narrow the time window for any time in Mossley Hill. I shall have to tap the source of that statement.

A search of the London Gazette 3 January 1973 reveals a John Moss d.30 October 1858 'late of Otterspool' . And mention of a will with 5 codicils. Sadly no address.

Anybody any idea as to why there's such a long delay between death and the official notice going out?

The notice is the end of the legal process rather than the start. As an affluent merchant and banker it may have taken some time to liquidate the assets of the deceased and comply with the terms of his will. The notice implies that they have completed that process to their satisfaction and now checking for loose ends by setting a final closure date after which they will not be responsible for any further claims.

A bit more info and a pic of the house here. It says John Moss moved there about 1811:

Johns marriage to Hannah (Taylor) places him in Manchester, Sept 1805 (Lancaster Gazette, 14th Sept. 1805).
The family are listed on the peerage website:
