I'd say so DS,
William Gray and Catherine Finnigan, parents of Andrew 1870 and Catherine 1872, CF then appears to leave the story and Catherine Johnston is introduced, I can't find a death of Gray/Finnigan.
Catherine Johnston
Re: Catherine Johnston
Beginning to think Catherine Finnigan died sometime between 1872 and 1875.
William Gray snr lived at 2 Southwell St from at least 1875 with Catherine Johnson to at least 1883, the birth of William jnr, he also shows in the street directory's.
I think the family leave 2 Southwell st and take up residence at 7 Molyneux, where, 2 children die, one being Catherine Johnston stepson, Matthew James is born in 86, the Cunningham? is an error,
Thomas and a still born are then born at 3 Southwell St, 88 & 89 and some of the family are still there for the 1901 census. The 1901 Street directory for that address shows J Gray, seaman as head?
Come 1908 a Catherine Gray is living at 10 Southwell St, 1911, 5 Southwell St, 1918, 10 Southwell St
Still can't find a marriage for WG and CJ, if they ever did.
Waiting for the pills to kick in

Re: Catherine Johnston
Catherine Gray/Finnegan may have just upped and left. By the time she came back [if she did] William was already busy with another Catherine.
I think it could well be one of those tangle webs as in "O, what a tangled web we weave when we practice to deceive" that old Shakie is supposed to have wrote. While often attributed to Shakespeare, it was actually written by Sir Walter Scott.
And not many people know that. Can't write in a Cockney accent....

Re: Catherine Johnston
I can read in a cockney accent.
She could have just left, hence no marriage for WG/CJ.
I wonder who J Gray, seaman, 3 Southwell St, 1901, is/was?
It can't be a mistaken WG, he died in 1898.
Perhaps a brother who took the family in.

I am starting to follow your theory that Catherine Finnigan/Gray passed and William married Catherine Johnston. The second child for Finnigan/Gray was Catherine and she was born Nov 13, 1872 Belfast.
The first child for Johnston/Gray was Annie born Jan.27, 1875 Belfast.
Thanks again, so much

Where are you seeing J Gray, seaman, at #3 Southwell Street in 1901? He isn't on the PDF original Household Return.

Here, DS,
I think he was probably at sea when the census was taken.
