Dublin 1851 census- patrick Riley

Does anyone know of an on-line source for the above-mentioned census. I am wanting ot know who lived at 32 Fishers Lane, Dublin at that time. I shall be grateful for any help with this.

I'm afraid most censuses earlier than 1901 for Ireland were destroyed. The main sources for research are Parish Registers, www.familysearch.org is pretty good, they also have most of the Civil Registrations, however I don't think you will find many at that date either.

Hi Riley,
The censuses of Ireland were destroyed during the period between the 1916 Easter Rising and the Irish Civil War. The only surviving censuses of Ireland are the reconstructed 1901 and 1911 censuses. Although reconstructed, they are accurate and you can access them here: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

The nearest data to a census from around 1851 would be the Griffiths Valuation. This was carried out from about 1848 to the 1860s. Only abstracts are available online. http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php

Hi Riley, There is actually a heads of household census for 1851 for Dublin. I'm afraid I've no idea how to access it. The head of the household for 32 Fishers Lane was Michael Geoghegan. Does this help?

The National Archives have created a new site http://www.genealogy.nationalarchives.ie/
You can now access the Census Records for 1901 and 1911, the Tithe Applotment Books from 1823 to 1837, and the Soldiers’ Wills from 1914 to 1917.

This site will have large numbers of other genealogical records added to it over the coming years, including:

Could I suggest the following alternative website for searching Griffiths Valuation.

On this site you can look at the original published pages of the valuation (after doing a family name search or place name search). In addition, using the reference number from the valuation, you can view the Ordnance Survey map of the time to see the precise location of the land/property identified. However, this latter option is not perfect, as I have discovered by experience. As the website itself explains "It should be noted that the connection between the maps and the Valuation is never perfect; there are regular omissions and mistakes. The best connection is in the working copies of the maps used in the Valuation Office itself."
