My grandfather Private George William Shepherd (born 20/12/1884-died 31/01/1966) was a member of the Kings Royal Rifle Corps 2nd Battalion Regimental Number 5180 during WW1.
When my father died I inhertited my grandfathers army medals, cap badge etc. Amongst the medals is the 1914 Star and Clasp with the inscription "5th Aug.-22nd Nov 1914" which I understand signifies that he served at Blackdown being part of the 2nd brigade in 1st division 13/08/1914 that landed in Le Harve France.
Family "talk" suggest's that he also lied about his age and served in the second part of the Anglo Boer War 1900-1902 within the KRRC. Since we have no supportive evidence is there any war records information that can either confirm or deny this talk of his first army experience?
Best Regards
Allan

There are Boer War Service Records on www.findmypast.co.uk Their T &Cs forbid look ups but Lancashire Libraries have a subscription to Find my Past.
