Re: 1871 census - England
If Mary Morrison married after Lucy's birth, Lucy would then probably have a different surname and that would explain her absence from the 1871 censuses. Have you checked for Scotland marriages? I hit 169 matches between 1861 and 1871, so we need to know the district where Mary was living and where Lucy was born to narrow the field. In the 1871 Scotland census there are 49 Lucys around the right age! Plenty of names to match in a marriage.
Are you of the opinion that Mary/Lucy moved out of Scotland at some stage?
EDIT TO ADD: If Mary did marry, Lucy would have been enumerated as a step-daughter by the head of household, Mary's spouse, and with his surname. When Lucy married she would probably have used her actual birth name.

Could you post or PM me the GRO index references for Lucy's marriage. I have only found 2 that fit for a plain Lucy.
MORRISON, Lucy - Derbyshire, Derby - 1895
MORRISON, Lucy - Yorkshire, Sheffield - 1904

Hi D.S
In the tree in Anx they have Lucy as marrying Robert Edmund Bach
24.4.1889 Edinburgh.
Mary is listed as her mother, no father (born 12.4.1861 Hospital St Glasgow)
Lucy has a child with surname Bach and 2 with surname of Beattie.
No info on mother Mary.

Hi DS and Tina
Thank you for the info. I'm not on Ancestry. I wish I could contact the owner of the tree.
Back to 1871 - Lucy where is she in 1871? - her mother Mary was living with a John Crawford - who was a slater we think. I dont think they married. But still cant find Lucy in 1871 - any help with this appreciated.
thanks again to you both

This is odd! Scotland's People only report one marriage for a Lucy Morrison between 1875 and 1895 [all districts].
1884 - CLARKSON, ROBERT and MORRISON, LUCY - KELVIN, GLASGOW CITY/LANARK - SGRO ref: 644/09 0056
However, a search on Robert Bach threw up this!
1889 - BACH, ROBERT and MATHIESON, LUCY - CANONGATE, EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN - SGRO Ref: 685/03 0097
So did Lucy's mother become a Mathieson? Or is the Ancestry tree astray? Really need to spend a few more credits to see the marriage record in full.

Drew, because it appears that Lucy married in Scotland [subject to confirmation considering that Ancestry tree] I think Lucy was almost certain to be in Scotland in 1871.

Re: 1871 census - England
Haven't seen the 1871 Scotland census entry for Mary living with John Crawford so don't know if she is using his surname or where he/she is. But there is a Lucy Crawford, abt the right age, in the 1871:
1871 - CRAWFORD, LUCY - 11 - BOWMORE OR KILARROW / ARGYLL - SGRO Ref: 536/00 002/00 021.

Are you actually saying that the marriage on Ancestry is definitely the wrong one? I couldn't resist taking a look at the full marriage record on Scotland's People!melness wrote:Hi DS

Lucy Mathieson is aged 26 [making her bn 1863] and a spinster. Her parents are John Mathieson [a slater] and Mary Mathieson [formerly Morrison]. I will send you a PM with a Photobucket reference so you can see for yourself.
Do you know where the correct Lucy married? When, where, and to whom?

Re: 1871 census - England
According to the tree on Ancestry,
Lucy Robertson Morrison, bn 12th April 1861,
District of Hutchesontown, 75 Hospital St.
Marriage to Robert Edmund Bach, 24th April 1889,
an address included, 27 Spring Gardens, Abbyhill.
There's also a suggestion on the tree she had an association with a James Beattie, bn 1862, no proof of marriage.

Re: 1871 census - England
Hi Bert,
There's a problem with that tree. That Bach marriage was to Lucy Mathieson bn abt 1863, dtr of John and Mary Mathieson nee Morrison. And Robert is plain Robert, no Edmund. Lucy is definitely Mathieson.

Re: 1871 census - England
Hi DS,
the tree doesn't look very reliable with no proof of anything really, only census information, though he has got the right address for Robert Bach. It looks like he's made an assumption from names on the cert that he must have had sight of.
Was Lucy's full name Lucy Robertson Morrison?

Re: 1871 census - England
According to the family tree on Ancestry Robert Bach died in 1914. Is it possible that Lucy remarried or 'took up' with James Beattie and the children then took his name?

The only way of getting in touch with the person on Ancestry is through the PM system on there, I've checked his profile and there is no email address to pass on to you. I can only offer to PM him for you and tell him of your interest, you will have to give me your email to pass on to him.
