City Hospital, Park Hill, Toxteth Park
City Hospital, Park Hill, Toxteth Park
Hi All
City Hospital, Park Hill, Toxteth Park
Could someone please tell me where this hospital was in 1917.
Also Kearsley St, Kirkdale. I've looked in my 1914 Directory and it's not listed and in 1938 only two numbers listed.
I've another sad story which I'll put in another thread
Thank you

Hi Erika 1911 doesn't list Kearsley road residents, only between the town sub post office on Kirkdale road,
and Bousdale St.
and Bousdale St.

Re: City Hospital, Park Hill, Toxteth Park
Hi Erika,
This info was on the Toxteth Net site (no longer available).
Infectious Diseases Hospital - South Hill Road
Varyingly named, it appears on the 1905-08 map series under the above name, and in Gore's directories as 'City Hospital' or 'City Hospiatal (Park Hill)' at the Dingle Road end of South Hill Road, though without a number. It is not found in, or prior to, 1881. It is not recorded in Gore for 1926 nor after this date. Little is yet know of this hospital, however Gore for 1894 records the following snippet of its history.
"An infectious diseases hospital, erected on land belonging to the Mersey Docks and Habours Board, at Park hill, Dingle, Toxteth park, was opened September 23rd 1884, and is available for 160 patients, 4 wards having been added in 1890; during 1892 439 patients were admitted : the hospital is under the management of the Hospitals committee of Liverpool."
Hope that helps.

Thank you girls for your quick and very informative replies.
Just the sort of answers I needed
The information about the hospital is spot on as my gt aunt died from TB. I'll have to scan the cert later and post it on here as there is a number written after Pulmonary Tuberculosis in the cause of death column, not sure what that means. Watch this space
Thanks again

Re: City Hospital, Park Hill, Toxteth Park
Would the number written be reasonable to suspect it might be number of days? sometimes I have noticed that written but not generally against an illness such as Tuberculosis that might have lasted some years.

Re: City Hospital, Park Hill, Toxteth Park
What number is it?
Re: City Hospital, Park Hill, Toxteth Park
As Mary has said, the number could mean the number of weeks or days the patient had the condition.
On my gg grandad's death cert it has 3 weeks, he had stood on a rusty nail at work, and died in The Southern hospital Toxteth 3 weeks later of tetanus.
I found the City hospital on 1891 census RG12 2941 folio 92 page 1. If you go to the previous page it gives South Hill Road as the address.

Yes, a number of my death certs say similar - in days, weeks or months.
Jan, that must've been a most unpleasant death. Poor man.

No I don't think so either, but unsure what it would be, not even sure it's a number.
