Mark Leonard, did he die on The Titanic?

Hi,

This is my 1st visit to the forum, and I am not sure whether any of you can help with my querie, so here goes' My gt Uncle Mark Leonard was born in Liverpool in 1897. In 1901 His mother died, so He and my Gran were sent to The Fazackerley Cottage homes, their elder brothers and Sister were old enough to work. To get to the point, my Gran's brothers all went to sea. Thomas died on the Empress of Ireland when it hit a Norwegian Freighter in the St. Lawrence Seaway, Canada in 1914. James died when his Ship, The SS Leasowe Castle was hit by a torpedo in 1918, but the family story is that Mark died on the Titanic. At the time of the sinking of the Titanic, Mark would have been 15 years old, he and my Gran had spent several or more years together in thee Cottage Homes. My Gran always maintained that he died on The Titanic, but there is no record of him being on the Ship. I have been told that if his name was not on the list, he could not have been on board, but the thing is, after the Titanic sank Mark was never seen or heard of again!! Can anybody help???

One of your lines of enquiry could be the Cottage Homes themselves. Coincidentally the Cottage Homes Reunion at Fazakerley was mentioned at our meeting this week, it is to be held on Saturday, 15th June and they are doing up one of the cottages to look as it was with a display of pastimes.

There was a Mark Leonard Varlow who went to Canada as a home child on the Dominion in 1912. I found him doing an ancestor search here:-

It looks like the person I found was born in Reading he served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in WW1. You can view the front and back of his Attestation papers here:-

I can't shed any light on the Titanic question but I wondered if you've seen the 1911 census for a Mark Lennoard b1897 enumerated at the house of Thomas Lennoard b 1883. Thomas's wife Elizabeth completed the return and has Mark down as a nephew but checking the 1901 census and their baptism records confirms that their surname was Leonard and they were brothers (sons of James and Esther)

I only mention it because if this is the right family and he was living with his brother in 1911 it makes the timings a bit tight for going to the cottage homes and then being on the Titanic in 1912. Not impossible though!

Edit: my mistake, Carol has been in touch to explain that they were in the cottage homes before going to live with siblings in the 1911 census.

There is one M Leonard on the Titanic casualty list and this may be the origin of the story - did someone jump to a conclusion perhaps, on seeing the name in the paper?

That M Leonard was Matthew Leonard, a US-born steward http://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/ti ... onard.html

My father John Leonard is the Grandson of Thomas Leonard who died on the Empress of Ireland. My Dad says that his understanding was that Thomas got his younger brother Mark onto the Empress of Ireland and he is also listed as crew on EOI, though I can only find his address as Seacombe, whereas Thomas was Gordon St Liverpool.

My Dad recalls going to see his fathers uncle over the water and there was an Aunt called Jane?

Anyway, I believe we are related and would be interested to know any further information you may have

There is a crew list for Empress of Ireland on this site http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/mari ... ories.aspx. It shows both Thomas and Mark Leonard as on the crew but neither are marked as having survived.
