Shepherd/Carter Family Tree

Post by allanpshepherd123 »

I have now decided to trace my family tree in addition to the Finnan/Lacey, Finnan/Johnson and Grice that I am currently involved in.

My father James Shepherd was (b) 29/10/1916 (d) 25/10/2004. His parents were George William Shepherd (b) 20/12/1884 (d) 31/01/1966 and Mary Carter (b) 24/04/1886 (d) 17/02/1960 married 13/01/1907.

My grandfathers parents were Ralph Shepherd born 1843 and Catherine nee Owens born 1847. Married 05/10/1873 at St Nicholas.
I have found the 1891 census on Ancestry for them which reads...
Shepherd Ralph 48 head
Shepherd Catherine 44 wife
Shepherd Ralph A 16 son
Shepherd Sarah 14 daughter
Shepherd Mary 11 daughter
Shepherd Alice 9 daughter
Shepherd William 6 son...my grandfather
Shepherd ??eury Ellen 3 daughter (cannot read Christian name)
3 Brookhill Road Bootle Liverpool.

1851 census from Ancestry reads...
Shepherd Ralph 37 head
Shepherd L???? 39 wife (cannot read Christian name)
Shepherd William 13 son
Shepherd George 10 son
Shepherd Ralph 8 son...my great grandfather
Shepherd Sarah 6 daughter
69 Eldron Place...I think!

I have tried to find the 1881, 1871, 1861 and 1841 census using the above information but have drawn blanks, can anyone please help me?

Best Regards
Allan

Well done Bert, all done and dusted before I wake up! Just what we were saying about early birds ;) you had a wakeful night?

Just wanted to say that I agree with Bert's thought that the wife would be Sarah and also that the address will be Eldon Place, check googlemaps you will be able to find the area even today, although a nice new village has been built around the canal.

I may be way out with this family, you will need a birth certificate for one of the children before you can be sure of the marriage between Ralph and Sarah, but I wonder if they have moved from the Manchester area, there is a possible on the online Parish Clerk site
Marriage: 4 Feb 1833 St Mary the Virgin, Prestwich, Lancashire, England
Ralph Sheppard - Oldham
Sarah Colling - (X), Oldham
Witness: Thomas Needham; Abrm. Kay
Married by Banns by: Thomas Tolming
Notes: [groom signed name as Shepherd]
Register: Marriages 1832 - 1834, Page 544
Source: LDS Film 2356186

and a possible baptism
Baptism: 4 Jun 1843 St Philip, Salford, Lancashire, England
Ralph Shepherd - [Child] of Ralph Shepherd & Sarah
Abode: Salford
Occupation: Labourer
Baptised by: I. Robley
Register: Baptisms 1826 - 1848, Page 124, Entry 987
Source: LDS Film 1545654

and which could fit with the 1841 census and children William and George
Oldham Street, Salford
Ralph Shepherd 25 Porter
Sarah 30
Ann 7
Mary 5
William 3
George 1

Hi Bert and Mary A

Thank you so much for the added information, I will see where it takes me. As my Zen Master told me "It is not the arrival but the journey".

I did find the 1861 in Manchester but I thought it was not him as I thought all our family were from Liverpool!!

Found Eldon Place, not far from Great Mersey Street where my wife lived!

Best Regards
Allan

The 1901 and 1911 give Ralph's birthplace as Manchester. There birth in 1843 in Salford Reg District would appear to be him.

1891 gives Ralph's birthplace as Hulme.

Great, even an image of the marriage entry in the parish register.

The witnesses were Abraham Kay, probably connected with the church as he seems to be a regular witness and Thomas Needham, who might be worth investigating to see if he was just a friend or perhaps a relative.

Yes! very interesting, shame there's no image for that one.

You need to be logged into Ancestry before you can access any of those other links, don't know if they will work if you just have a login rather than an account.

Ralph and Catherine's son died when the Lusitania sunk in 1915
See http://www.merseysiderollofhonour.co.uk ... gc=3032664 for biography.

He is remembered on St Elizabeth's RC Church memorial and also on the C of E church St Andrews just down the road from St Elizabeths. Seems to have had a foot in both camps.

Unfortunately I was unable to find a photo of him when I did the original biography.

Hello Eileen

Thank you sooo much for your contribution to my posting and the biography of Ralph Alfred Shepherd which has his Family details. AMAZING!!

Ralph's father Ralph was my great grandfather. My Dad James had a brother Ralph who did not marry and to my knowledge that was the end of carrying the "Ralph" name on.

I will revisit the Merseyside Roll of Honour and pay my respects to my cousin.

Best Regards
Allan

Been looking further into family tree and something come up that I cannot understand.

My grandfather William Shepherd, his wife Mary, son William (born 1907) age 4 and son Ralph (born 1910) aged 1 are shown on the 1911 census as visitors living at 16 Maria Road Walton. They also had a daughter Alice registered Dec qtr 1908 west Derby 8b 454 but she is not listed nor can I find her living with anyone else. If she was in hospital would this be the reason for same?

Also being a "visitor" does this mean that at the time of the census they had no place of abode or were they simply staying with the brother in law and their home was not registered?

The family eventually lived at 9 and 11 Buchanan Road Walton.

Allan

The only Alice Shepherd born 1908 in Liverpool is on the 1911 with parents Henry and Alice. Do you have any other proof that she was in your Shepherd family?

Hello Bert

I had previously accessed the information regarding William and Ralph at 16 Maria Road but I still do not understand why Alice is not mentioned. For a long time after our wedding in 1967 my wife and I visited my grandparents old house in Buchanan Road for many years where she lived with my Auntie Edna and Uncle Ralph. Neither three ever married.

Hello Barbara

Auntie Alice was always known as my dad's sister and to my knowledge always lived in Buchanan Road, very strange!

I know her sweetheart went to war and never returned which is why she stayed single.

I will check the 1911 census for Henry and Alice to see if anything rings alarm bells.

Best Regards
Allan
