Hoping you can help me trace my g grand mother's birth place. I have her death certificate which shows her name as Eleanor Kate Dickinson aged 48 years, died on 19/10/1914 at her residence 147 Old Mill Lane, Formby. Parish records for a burial 25/10/1914 st St Peters, Formby. Also I have parish records of her marriage to Harry Dickinson on 28/3/1891 at St George, Chorley, her name on the parish records Helena Kate Kennedy, 25, spinster of St George's House, father is William Kennedy, deceased, Joiner. With regards to census records this is where I am having a problem, the 1911 cenus is for a Kate Dickinson, 1901 census is for an Eleanor Dickinson, these two census are correct (children match). I am unable to locate her in the 1891 census but she would have married around the weekend of the census. Both census state that she was born in Chester. I would love to be able to get her birth certificate and move further generations back but have not been able to locate a William Kennedy and my ggrandmother with any certainty. Heres hoping someone can help. Am coming to Southport (I emigrated with my parents in 1958 to Melbourne, Australia) in December and will be hoping to look up as many places as I can. I was born in Southport and my mothers family have strong Formby links. Other family links are Eccles, Rimmer, Hodson. Thnks in advance. . Cheers Carole

Can you tell us the names of the witnesses at the marriage, in fact the full details would help ie Harry's age, father's name etc. Did they marry by Banns or Licence?

Have you traced Harry in earlier censuses? Is he the one boarding in North Meols in 1891 and would Chas and Jane Dickenson living a few doors away be connected with him? Am thinking that they are also from Cheshire.

Well although 51 Chapel Street, Chorley appears to be occupied by a Sarah Roberts and boarders, none of them is our Harry.
"The 1891 Census for England was taken on the night of 5 April 1891." so too late perhaps, they have already gone somewhere else.

There is the possibility that Helena only assumed she was born in Chester or Cheshire when completing the census forms. She may not have known for certain. As you have probably discovered there is no matching birth registration in Chester/Cheshire for 1866 +/- 5 years. But her birth may not have been registered either and she may have fibbed about her age when she married, just to add to the problem.

There is a Cheshire baptism [but no matching birth registration]. Has the name William [deceased] been confused with Samuel?

Many thanks everyone for your welcome wishes and for your help. I have found the census for Harry for 1901 Old Mill Lane, Formby, 1881 census Church Road, Formby living with is father. 1871 census Greens Lane living with his parents, Henry Hoyle Dickinson and Ellenor Lord. I have found a William Kennedy on the 1881 census RG11 4054 Folio 48 page 28 with a Kate and also on 1871 census with a Catherine RG10 4084 Folio 70, with an address in Dukinfield. My geography is not that wonderful with the area but I believe that Dukinfield is in Cheshire. Could this be my great grandmother.

Stalybridge being only a couple of miles from Dukinfield, her sister, Rose Ann Kennedy married James Cussack, St Peters Catholic church, Staleybridge, 1905. If the father William is recorded as a joiner on her marriage cert, possibilities exist.
