Marriage licence registered in Cheshire

Post by lynne99 »

Hi, I have 2 ancestors that were married by licence. They are Josiah Dean and Margaret Oddy married 24 September 1771 in Ormskirk. Married by licence.
secondly Eliza Harvey 11 Aug 1870 at St Peter's Everton. The first one I would like to know their parent's names and possibly get a copy of the licence.
The second couple I have the marriage certificate but would like to know what the licence says as Eliza was only 16 and their first child was not born until 9 months and 1 week after their wedding, so I am perplexed.

Help please if you can. Thanks Lynne

In my experience a Marriage Licence doesn't give a great deal of information. This one says

1771 Sept 22nd No. 3150 Josiah Dean of the Parish or Chapelry of Ormskirk and Margaret Oddy of the same to be married in the Church or Chapelry of Ormskirk Oath and Bond The Same and John Oddy.

I received another couple from Lancashire record office and they gave 2 people who represented the wife and their relationship to her. Do I take it that John Oddy was her father? Thanks I will have to carry on sleuthing.

No relationship given, but I would suspect so.
