DNA Hints

Post by MaryA »

I am far from professing myself knowledgeable in the intricacies of DNA but thought a few things that have found a little useful might help others.

First of all a youtube demo for Ancestry
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cu86iUV ... l+Programs

An informative article - Understanding Patterns of Inheritance: Where Did My DNA Come From? (And Why It Matters.)
although on the Ancestry website doesn't refer to the Ancestry test in particular
https://blogs.ancestry.com/ancestry/201 ... +Campaigns

and a FREE book on Amazon for Kindle download - don't know how long it will be free for!
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Guide-DNA-Test ... na+testing

I have uploaded my DNA to Ancestry and FamilytreeDNA. It is very frustrating when they come up with matches for people who do not have a tree on either site to cross reference. Half the time the DNA match is too small to prove anything without a tree. GEDmatch is also good for comparing DNA. Both my wife amd mine are on it, and have some 4th generation matches.

Yes it is, however I have only recently uploaded my tree to Ancestry but have kept it private, and have had a few contacts to who I've opened my tree. Sadly these particular connections are very mysterious as we've been unable to identify where we match.

Using Gedmatch I've been able to use the test to find out who else has the same DNA as both of us and mostly the same people are in the results, some of them I can work out their relationship to each other, but not to me. Don't know whether to laugh or cry about that.
